You don't have to use Slash to compete with Slashdot; you can just use 
it as an easy announcement platform. Other weblog-type software might be 
useful as well, for similar purposes. (I know there's PHP solutions, or 
Movable Type which is Perl-based.) Basically, anything that makes the 
site easier to update exponentially increases the chances that someone 
actually will...
