Problem recompiling kernel . . .

I'm running RH 7.0, kernel 2.2.16, and I can't seem to recompile the 
kernel - when I "make bzImage" it stops quickly, saying that there's a 
badly punctuated #define in checksum.S lines 231 and 237. Thanks a bunch 
if you can help me.
