First, you really should use
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook.xml to install gentoo.
Second, are you sure you extracted the correct stage for your system ?
Lots of posts like this are on the gentoo forum and most of them are
resolved by using the correct stage tarball for their
hardware architecture.
