Follow-up for anybody interested:
From several persons that responded (some off-list),
I can report that most laptops do work without the battery.
My Inspiron 3500 is mega-busted so maybe it is a false
negative in my (statistically weak) small subsample
(better recheck that 1998 Mac powerbook too).
Percentage of laptops that can work without any
battery is apparently 90%+ or something.
