For starters, here are some questions I need to ask to better help you:

1.  What kind of modem is it?  Internal or external?
2.  Do you know which hardware address/com port and IRQ it's on?

Without this information, it's going to be rough getting answers to your 
first questions.  You should make certain that at least kppp is installed, 
which will help you to set up the ppp networking that will be necessary 
once we've sorted out the modem settings.
