[GLLUG] Linux

Maybe I just got lucky but in my experience there was no MAC
address locking. I subscribed with one MAC address, tested
with another and have my Linksys on the cable modem now.
No MAC address trickery was involved.

I've even used a Windows PC at my place in Holt to register
someone else's modem (to their own account) and sent if off
pre-registered to Delta Township.

The proxy is only used during the initial configuration.
Once it's done it'll remove the proxy entry from your IE
settings. Most people should never notice it was ever set.
