[GLLUG] emerge freezing up and Good Anti-virus software

First question:

 

It seems like emerge keeps freezing up on me. I run "emerge -p sendmail" and
all that happens is the cursor jumps down to the next line, and sits there.

 

I ran "emerge libgd" and it did stuff, then got to the point about
regenerating something (sorry I can't remember the details), then just sat
there over night. Never came back to the command prompt.

 

I have tried removing the portage folder and then running emerge sync, but
that doesn't seem to do any thing. It does seem to kind of work if I do a
reboot.

 

The only thing that I can think of to try is to copy the portage snapshot
off of the installation cd again.

 

Could I be running into problems because I'm trying to do this through ssh
instead of locally?

 

What is going wrong? How can it be fixed?

 

Second question:

 

Any good anti-virus programs out there? I may be letting public uploads to
my webserver and I would like to be able to scan for viruses.

 

I'm running Gentoo.
