So how was the meeting? I wasn't able to make it.

Do minutes get posted anywhere?

. . .

This list seems pretty quiet. I am guessing that most of the members are pretty experienced? I used to belong to the GRLUG mailing list and, while they couldn't organize meetings worth a damn, there was still a lot of list activity. A lot of people asking questions.

That said, I guess I'll ask for opinions here. . . I am not new to linux by any means. However my wife is. I set up Ubuntu for her to use because she liked the look of it (I showed her the live DVD I got from Linux Format.) This was a few months ago and, lo and behold, she likes Linux! All of a sudden the woman who hated computers likes Linux!

Needless to say I was excited. We talked about Linux almost everyday.

The original install was on a Thinkpad 600e. Many of you may (or may not) know the woes of installing any version of linux on the 600e. I have had rh9, slackware, debian and now ubuntu on it. Configuring the sound is always a hassle because of the chipset.

I just gave her an R30 that I got for free and loaded the Dapper Beta on it. I chose dapper for a few reasons - some of the features, etc.

Everything seemed great. The install was unbelievably easy. One of the quickest most user friendly installs I've had. I think I could have had *her* install it.

Everything was peachy until I tried to get the Linksys 802.11g card working. I looked at my logs and there are a few problems. The one I am going to address at the moment is the wireless.

It is using a Broadcom driver for the chipset. Now, after much searching on the net, it seems the broadcom driver *can* work but will only actually function at 11Mbps. Ndiswrapper seems a better way to go (that's how I had it set up in Breezy on the 600e.) Can anyone think of a reason to *not* use Ndiswrapper? I have never had a problem with it.

I guess I am just trying to get a discussion going here. I am most likely going to use Ndiswrapper no matter what but I wanted to see if anyone was out there. What kind of activity this list has the potential for.

Who knows - If I get a response maybe I can get help with the other problem I am have with it.

Regards,
