I am not sure if anyone already suggested this, but
what about going to http://knoppix.org and downloading
the live CD?

Just make sure that the computer is set to scan the
cd-rom drive for bootable disks before booting from
the hard drive.

For running off the cd-rom, Knoppix does a really nice
job.  You can hardly tell that it is running off a CD.
