What is your friends end goal? To learn AIX, or to do something cool?
If he is trying to learn AIX what he will want is a version of AIX 5.x and it may or may not run on the old hardware. If you let me know the hardware he is trying to run on I can let you know what versions of AIX should run on it. The hardware should be identified by a number like 7128-43p, i.e. nnnn-yyy.
As far as Linux is concerned Yellow Dog has probably the best support for legacy IBM hardware out there.
Keep in mind most of these old boxes are MCA (Micro Chanel) not PCI based so more modern distributions may not support it either.
All in all sounds like a fun project.

From there select perform system maintenance, and select to access the disks. Then you can echo in a UID 0 account into the password file and reboot and reset the passwd. or use sed/awk etc.
Its easier to do it this way than set up the environment to vi the file.
If you friend is willing to upgrade I can probaly hook you up with some AIX 4.1, 4.3, or 5.x media. However 5.x may not run on the older hardware.

unfortunately we do not have the original media, and I belive it uses 5" floppies, I'm not sure if it's capable of 3.5" or not. This machine belongs to a friend of mine. It w! as given to him. If anyone has an Idea on how to get there hands on the original disks... or make them....

When you're in you can then just change the password as you would normally.

anyone know how you would get the root password off an old AIX 3 machine? or alter it.
