I have never seen an RS/6000 that uses 5.25" floppies. Is it a pc, a
power pc or a an old power machine?

Any bootable AIX tape should be able to be booted into a recovery mode.
The older machines used to have a key switch position with a wrench on
it that selected a maintenance mode boot. On newer machines you have to
hit F5 or F8 as icons start to appear on the console.

The machines ship with diagnostics on floppy and/or cds. You may be able
to get the root volume group mounted via them. Any procedure that you
can use to remove a linux root password should work for AIX as well.

If you can't get bootable media you could always try it from Linux but I
doubt that you can get it mounted. The filesystem is almost certainly
JFS version 1 stored on an old LVM disk.

The bad thing about all of this is that even if you get it working the
machine is going to slow and memory constrained that it will be
disgusting to use.
