[GLLUG] can't su or sux

I've been having a problem where I can't use su or sux. they simply
aren't authenticating my root password. which I can log into directly
or sudo to. I know the password is correct. I'm wondering if anyone
has any Ideas on how to narrow down, or solve this problem.
