[GLLUG] Call for Computer Lounge Volunteers

Hi all,
I just wanted to throw in my two cents and underscore this point: we
absolutely need more volunteers in the lounge in order to pull it off
at all.
Although we're happy to have help with setup and teardown, where we need
it the most is just having someone in there at all times. There are two
kinds of "positions" that we need people for:
- Tech Penguins: Someone at least somewhat familiar with Linux and
hardware in general that can answer questions and help users in the
lounge. You don't need to be a guru and you won't be held responsible
for anything that breaks, you're just there to give GLLUG a friendly
face and provide miscellaneous technical support to the lounge
visitors.
- Security Daemons: No computer knowledge at all is necessary for this.
All you need to do is literally sit there and make sure none of the
hardware is stolen or abused. Penguicon has never in 4 years had a
problem with either of these, but some effort is needed to help keep it
that way.
We can get away with not having any Tech Penguins in the worst-case
scenario, but I feel that would reduce the overall quality of the
lounge. We can't get away with not having enough Security Daemons,
though. All the hardware we have in there cannot be left unwatched at
any time. Closing the lounge isn't an option since we're sharing the
space with gaming and the Chaos Machine. It is not enough to simply go
to the con and plan to volunteer once you get there. We need to know
*now* so that Chick can put together the schedule in advance figure out
where we need more coverage.
Remember that if you volunteer 6 hours or more, your registration is
refunded if the con turns a profit. (Which it has every year so far.)
Food and drinks are provided in the consuite for free, so if you had a
place nearby to crash, you could technically attend Penguicon, have a
metric crapload of fun, and not have to pay anything at all in the end.
Where else are you going to get that kind of deal?
Please send Chick and email stating how many hours you can spare during
the weekend. You can also take a look at the programming schedule and
then let him know which blocks of time that you prefer so that you
don't miss any panels that you really wanted to see.
Thanks for taking the time to read this long-winded message and please
volunteer your time if you can.
