[GLLUG] linux charities?

Starting an Non-Profit 501(c)(3) is very expensive as of the new round of
laws. Just to apply for the IRS paperwork, you are looking at over $1,000,
let alone any attorney fees that will be required to go over the paperwork
when you get it.

You would also be bound to a very strict set of rules on what the money can
and can't be used for. The scope of the group would also have to be
strictly adhered to as well.

I know there is an offer from LINC to help some of the local user groups out
in this regard... Has that thought been followed?

Registering as a non-profit requires a lot of paperwork and the overhead
would likely remove all the benefit to a group our size. My parents
have been involved in some non-profit groups and the only way it was
really doable was to get an existing non-profit to oversee the group (in
those cases, a school district overseeing various booster and
fund-raising groups). Even some of the multi-million dollar Mozilla
projects are for-profit companies just to lessen the overhead costs. We
could still use funds to educate, but I think the big difference is that
those funds would not be tax deductible, so the individual donating
still pays the tax.
