Thanks for your input, Patrick.

To update anyone still following my saga, I was able to successfully run XChat
(which comes with Slackware 11.0 [or maybe Dropline Gnome]). That was so
simple and worked so nicely that I'll probably just use that -- no pain,
lotsa gain.

Just to be sure, I registered a nickname on IRC then went back to Emacs 'erc'
and tried again, this time using my newly-registered nickname and password.
Same failure as before. It's odd that XChat (and BitchX) worked with no
problems while 'erc' just keeps failing to connect. As to your 3rd
suggestion, I was using the Emacs default (prompted) port of 6667 (which
comes up after the host prompt, just as you described). That is to say, I was
not manually adding it. And I'm still on Emacs 21.4.2 (Slackware 11.0) so I
had to unzip the 'erc' files from the download and add a link in my '.emacs'
file.

I'd still like to solve the mystery at some point, but for now, XChat seems to
do nicely.

Thanks again to all who provided input.

Regards,
Bill Marr
