3. Linux Multimedia, SusSE 11.2 + Kaffeine

It finally dawned on me that the real issue with multimedia in Linux is;
where are the missing codecs? Turns out the people who put together
media players for Linux users worry they might be accused of aiding
and abetting Hollywood movie piracy. So- by analogy with the way
Audacity leaves off the lame codec. Media player programmers omit
key video and audio codecs from their packages. Leaving it to the
amateur to figure out the problem and then go and locate and install
the essential codecs.

Anyway, after weeks and weeks of false starts I finally got Kaffeine
sort of working in SuSE Linux 11.2 off a Hauppauge 1950 (model 1192)
USB TV box. The reason for my success is two fold-

(1) I figured out how to install Mike Isley's driver and firmware.
(2) I found an easy to understand tutorial:
http://www.acaciaclose.co.uk/4436/index.html<http://www.acaciaclose.co.uk/4436/index.html>

Telling me everything I need to know about Kaffeine.

Just now I can see WLNS (Lansing MI) as an over the air digital
broadcast. Someday soon I might be able to get Kaffeine to scan
for channels off my Broadstripe cable connection.

Does anyone know why I can't find a cable channel when I put
Kaffeine in the scan mode?

I used one of those OLPC laptops and it was so slow loading programs and switching between programs, it was pretty much unusable in comparison to any other computers I've ever used. Did anybody else out there have any experience with the OLPC laptop?

I saw one at Penguicon two years ago and it was quite snappy with the
apps in use. Perhaps you weren't running applications suitable for
the hardware? It's designed for low power, not high performance.
