Web design is a great choice... but I am a bit biased on that I guess
since its what I do.

Within web design I think the most sought after skills currently are:
Valid xhtml/css markup (obviously)
jQuery (and to a lesser extend prototype, MooTools, Ext Js,
Cappuccino, Sprout Core, etc).
PHP 5.2/5.3/6
PHP Frameworks CakePHP (and to a lesser extent Codeignitor)
Python, specifically Django
Ruby on Rails

There are some Java jobs in web development but from my experiance
looking if someone wants a Java person they want a hardcore Java (3-5
years) person. I almost never see entry level Java jobs where as PHP
and Django have them all the time.
