We used to use jabberd2, but switched to ejabberd (mainly due to
Debian package availability).  I wish I'd done that a lot sooner.
Unlike jabberd2, it provides an administration web interface as well as
command-line admin tools.  It's a lot easier to work with.  Looking at
the feature list, it says it does support PAM authentication, so that
sounds like what you want.
