Yes, it should have given a message, but many systems no longer do that.
Back in the olden days, part of the boot up was a RAM test. It kept 
taking longer and longer.
I'd really get tired of the wait for 4 gig of RAM to be tested on any of 
the old systems. The machine might boot up in a half an hour.
