Well, blacklisting the ehci_hcd module didn't work. According to this
web page
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Problem_with_USB_2.0
the module is probably compiled into the kernel or incorporated into the
initrd file. The suggestion to "unbind" the module from the hardware
seems to work, however.

After examining the dmesg log, it appears that the USB ports only worked
for the USB 1.x device (using uhci_hcd) but none of the USB 2.0 devices
I tried (which use ehci_hcd). I also found a note on the ThinkWiki
website about USB 2.0 devices not working. (I neglected to mention that
the laptop is a ThinkPad.) They had several suggested solutions. Rather
than replace the motherboard, I elected to blacklist the ehci_hcd driver
and see how that works.
