[GLLUG] VOIP in Lansing area

Google does support new 517 numbers - but only every couple weeks,
because they run out and then get some more numbers and then run out
again. But you also have to be careful that you're getting the right
517 area. If you get a 517 number from Jackson, for example, people in
Lansing who try to dial that number without the 517 will not reach
you.

As far as porting, they say they can do it for a $20 fee, but I don't
have any experience with that part of the service.

Google Voice really does open up your options though. If you forward
it to a Skype phone, it's $2.99 monthly for unlimited US and Canada
calling, unlike most other VoIP services that charge (from what I've
seen) $30 to $45 monthly. And unlike most other services, you can
still get a great rate without paying for a year or two year chunk.
With Google Voice, you could even just have the home number forward to
your cell number - leaving no need for another service.
