I use debian 7.0 (Wheezy).

During the install select the base system ONLY.

after reboot install kdebase (or kde-base I don't remember exactly right 
now) and kdm.  Doing this you don't get all of the programs / 
applications you never use.

After that install whatever else you want:  synaptic, iceweasel, 
icedove, libreoffice, etc...
