I don't want this to be misunderstood but I had Alan burn me four CDs a few
weeks ago and some of them did also have a slight error on them so that an
install would break at a certain package. I got around it by switching CDs in
mid-process

I doubt its Alan's fault. It just shows CD burning is definitely not flawless.
