How about we at least establish which distro he's running.  What 
are you running Tim?  If it is Red Hat based, then there are 
multiple files you have to download and install (and possibly 
in a particular order).  Also, it may be a good idea to 
completely leave XFree to upgrade the RPMs.  Did you re-start 
Xfree?  (not just log out back to xdm/gdm)

I haven't touched 4.0 yet, so I don't have any experience with it.
