My understanding from the MediaOne people was that
the infrastructure is there to deploy cable modems.
The reason MediaOne didn't is because in 1998 they
cut a deal w/ TCI to trade the Lansing territory
to TCI for some of TCI's territory in the Detroit
suburbs. That plan was nixed by AT&T buying out
both TCI & MediaOne here in town. It is my under-
standing that AT&T is simply waiting to determine
who will be the actual ISP for this part of Lansing,
and working out the staffing and support logistics
to roll out the service. They've probably hired
some marketing consultants to come out and do some
demographic research and see what kind of money
they can reasonably expect to make rolling out
Internet service in this part of town.

Of course, this may all be put on hold by Ameritech's
latest PAC stunt with stopatt.com. I would have
a more open mind if Ameritech were making low-cost
high-speed connections available in all of Lansing,
but they're not, and they've been real slow to do
so. It seems like a thinly veiled attempt to
keep AT&T from getting business in an area that
Ameritech (due to laziness, incompetence, whatever)
isn't prepared to compete in yet. I say too bad.
I want 10MBps and I want it now (even if it is dhcp).
