Debian potato problem

Sounds like bad memory. Thats what my Sparc box did, not having a
copy of linux-sparc handy, I tried the solaris install and it told me I
had bad memory and it wouldnt install until I isolated the chip and
removed it. 

On a side note if you havent ever used/admin'd Solaris, its a lot like
linux is, I guess thats because they are both more or less SysV unixes..
