/usr/src/linux-2.4.2/Documentation/Changes says :
"Upgrade your pppd to at least version 2.4.0b1 for use with kernel 2.4.x."

It's a small download, a quick compile, and it's fully backwards-combatible
with kernel 2.2.x. Of course, you need to have a working net drop to download
it... hope you still have a 2.2.x kernel around, or something.

Next time, before you undertake a major kernel upgrade, have a look in that
