You don't necessarilly have to run their software to register the cable
modem, you can call them up and do it over the phone - the mac address
should be written somewhere on the cable modem.  I had to do this when I
bought my own cable modem instead of using theirs.

You have to run *part* of their software to register *a* MAC address for
your cable modem.  Once you're set up, and you can get an IP address via
DHCP, you get rid of their software and run whatever OS you like.  You
don't even need to use the same NIC once it's all setup, they just keep
a database for accountability.

My suggestion would be to find someone with a Windows laptop, run their
stupid software to get an initial IP, and then hook up the 95 box, and
all should be well.
