Dylan-

I had a very similar problem when I was using a Promise Ultra100TX2 IDE
controller; file listing, mkdir, cd, chown all seemed to work fine, but
when I did a cp or other massive data transfer, the server locked up.
Turns out that controller wasn't "quite" supported in the kernel and
crashed spuriously. That particular one has since been fixed, however
my point is that you may have some hardware that is spuriously
supported. What models/brands of drive controller and ethernet card do
you have? Anything "cutting edge"?

What type of client are you using for the file transfers?

Although unlikely the problem, could you post your smb.conf file here?
