[GLLUG] Debian based install mount woes

Has anyone had this problem where Debian edge boots fine from the CD,  
but once the installer tries to mount the CD if fails?  The same  
thing happens with Ubuntu 6.10.

Machine is an IBM 6350 with a GeForce4 MX card in it.  I've trolled  
the web and found a lot of suggestions that don't lead to answers.

Things I have tried:

Burning a new disc
Checksumming the disc
Tried Sarge
Tried Ubuntu
Various boot parameters

Any ideas?
