[GLLUG] linux-user Digest, Vol 89, Issue 7

I am not sure what the gllug.org website is served from, but I don't think an IRC server would take up all that much in resources if it was just running a #gllug channel and not linked in with a large network of other irc servers.

http://www.inspircd.org/

or you could set up a php chat page on the website.

http://www.phpfreechat.net/

unless you wanted irc because you're on a dial-up.

ok first off if the subject of this email says what im told not to have it say then, i dont know how to change it (im using gmail). if an IRC channel was recreated, which by the way i was the one who suggested, i would have no problem being on just about all day. however i know it would take much more then just one person. i on the other hand find it hard to talk with this email type of conversation and, i find irc a very quick and easy way to communicate with another. since i dont have a reliable way to travel to schulers at the moment other then walking and i dont liek waiting a long time i just find it easier to talk via IRC. well, its nice meeting all of you who ever it is thats a part of gllug. if i find out how to use the email system better then perhaps i'll speak more. oh yeah i believe #gllug has been taken by the greater london linux users group :/

In case you haven't been keeping up with the website, someone suggested

on it that we start an IRC channel.  I found out at tonight's meeting

that we had one a few years ago.  Does anyone know if it still exists,

and is still ours to use?  Was it with Freenode, or with another host?

It was on freenode #gllug...I'll bet it has expired, and can be registered

once more.

My 2 cents:

Freenode channels work by people leaving their computers on at all hours

lerking in the irc room, even if they don't chat all that often, so that

anyone who glances at it can help out whoever needs it. It didn't work out

last time because people didn't lerk all the time, or put in the effort to

keep it alive. Mind you, I'm not bitter about it at all, I don't think IRC

makes sense for gllug. If you need help, just ask the list, and people can

help you out.
